Sarver still owns this tractor and routinely uses it for mowing. Sarver purchased the 1972 Speedex S24 and set out to fix the steering which had long been seized. Sarver went to Fleegle’s Lawn & Garden to see if they might have a Speedex for sale.īecause the business was primarily a Cub Cadet dealer they did not have a Speedex at their store, but the owners had an old tractor in need of repairs at their home. He was looking for a tractor to use for various utility work around his home. While Sarver got to drive the tractors as a kid, he didn’t own his first Speedex until the early 1990s. “As a kid I got to run all of the new Speedex tractors,” Sarver said. Besides doing radiator work, Walt Price was also the local Speedex dealer and sold the tractors at his shop. His father’s garage was in a building shared by Price’s Radiator Shop. Sarver’s father Herbert Sarver was a mechanic who operated his business out of a garage along Lincoln Highway. Sarver’s first exposure to Speedex tractors came at an early age. It is from this time period that most of Sarver’s tractors were originally built. reached its peak popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sarver also notes that the Speedex Tractor Co. and followed a similar path, leading to the development of Wheel Horse tractor line. Ironically, Pond’s brother Elmer also left the Shaw Mfg. Shortly thereafter Pond changed the name of his business to the Speedex Tractor Co. after 1948, Pond designed his own transmission and rear end out of necessity. When Ford decided to no longer supply parts to the Pond Tractor Co. Many of Pond’s early tractors used Briggs & Stratton engines with Ford transmissions and rear ends. Co., Pond used several major components from other companies. Pond designed the Model B, which was the first four-wheel garden tractor commercially built in the United States. Co., Pond was responsible for material shipments in the Ohio and Pennsylvania region. Co., a company that built walk behind tractors and outdoor equipment from reclaimed motorcycles and surplus automobile parts. Pond had previously been affiliated with the Shaw Mfg. The Sarvers’ collection is one of a lesser known brand that has long since gone out of business, but through their restoration of these tractors the Speedex name continues to be shared with a younger generation at several local shows.Įd Sarver explained that the history of the Speedex tractor began in 1935 when Harold Pond founded the Pond Tractor Co.

If you have a 16 hp Briggs & Stratton, the serial number is stamped onto top of the flywheel shroud. Not sure if there is any logic built into this number. On the tag just to the right of the stamped frame number. This frame serial number has not the same as SPEEDEX NO. The third 4 digits indicates the (year and month) the unit was assembled. The first 4 digits indicate the model number (1631), The second 4 digits indicate the unit number. On a 1631, the frame serial number is 12 digits in length. The Speedex 1631 frame has the serial number (stamped) into it just beneath the engine on the flywheel side.
